2018 Manga List Part 2
Part 2 of my 2018 manga list, these are the ones I’m really following. The staples of my reading list and where my taste of manga normally runs. Whenever I check a new manga, you can pretty much see the themes that I like; good stories & interesting characters.
Check them out and let me know if I should check some others in the line of these ones.
Berserk is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. The story is about a mercenary named Guts who was a solo mercenary. Some circumstances led him to join a well-renowned band of mercenaries called the Band of Hawks. The story follows the rise and fall of Guts in a world where nothing is what it seems.
I love this manga (and the anime that was adapted from it). The illustrations, the action, the characters, the story – all top notch. I can put this up with the top fantasy literature of the western world. It is that good.
Hajime no Ippo
Hajime No Ippo is a Japanese boxing manga series written and illustrated by George Morikawa. It has been serialized by Kodansha in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since 1989 and has been serialized in 119 volumes to date. It follows the story of Makunouchi Ippo, who took to boxing after being bullied and wanted to change. He begins his career in boxing and over time obtains many titles and defeats various opponents.
I’m a big fan of sports manga and Ippo has been consistently one of the greats. The action is not too fantastical, very grimy and realistic. The characters are very distinct and likable. Also, this manga has jokes, albeit somewhat crude but who gives a fook lol.
Fuuka is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Kōji Seo. The story follows Yuu Haruna, a loner and an avid social media user that made a promise with his childhood friend Koyuki Hinashi to start a band.
While this is a slice of life music manga, this has some serious cohones with the way they deal with story and character. I still haven’t recovered from it. Read it and enjoy some good storytelling while enjoying the rock star life.
Fukumenkei Noise is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Ryoko Fukuyama. The story is about unrequited love and rock music.
Who isn’t familiar with unrequited love? I love the musical aspect of it and the way the story and characters are being handled. Read this one if you enjoy a little “shipping” with your manga but the musical aspect is solid.
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru is a manga written and illustrated by Baba Yasushi. Kohinata Minoru is a student at a college that is popular for its sports. He starts out as a gymnast alongside his friend, Nana, Minoru is bullied by the higher ranked gymnasts. One evening, a karate student named Mutou Ryuuji witnesses Minoru being bullied and saves him. Thus began his life in the world of karate.
Need I say more, it’s a karate manga, and a well done one in fact. Read it and channel the Chuck Norris within. Not biased at all since I love karate when I took it as a kid, lol.
Overall, part 2 of my manga list for 2018 is almost complete. I think I still have 1 more part to write. I’m double checking that I didn’t miss anything since I feel like I read a lot more than what I’ve listed.
