Koutetsujou no Kabaneri [Anime Review]
Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (aka Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) is an anime series by Wit Studio. It was directed by Tetsurō Araki and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi. Music by Hiroyuki Sawano and original character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto. The series premiered on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block on April 8, 2016, and ended on June 30, 2016. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri has a total of 12 episodes released and a movie sequel in the works.
Horrifying creatures emerge from nowhere, ripping through the flesh of humankind due to their never-ending hunger. The only way to kill these beings, known as “Kabane,” is by destroying their steel-coated hearts. However, if bitten by one of them, the victim is doomed to rise as a fallen once more and join the ranks of the undead.
Only the most fortified areas survived this turmoil, like the island of Hinomoto, where mankind has created a massive wall to protect themselves from the endless hordes of Kabane.
World War K
I have mixed feelings about this anime. The animation is great and the soundtrack is good enough. The story is simple enough but it could’ve used some polish. There are some points, especially in the ending arc, where it could’ve used some editing and polishing.
The characters are a mix of the cookie cutter variety and original. Ikoma is a cookie cutter shonen protagonist but I like him enough. He isn’t mopy like the other ones I’ve seen and he’s full of drive and spirit. Mumei is original enough, her motivation and struggle with it are interesting.
The main supporting characters seem like they were taken from a stock depository. While the side supporting characters are beaming with originality.
The Night of the Living Dead
Overall, this isn’t the Shingeki No Kyojin clone as everyone stated. I didn’t even like Shingeki No Kyojin as much as everyone did so I can objectively view this anime.
Koutetsujou no Kabaneri had some good ideas that could’ve been executed well but didn’t. A missed opportunity to create a franchise that rivals Shingeki No Kyojin. I still enjoyed it enough to watch it though so you should check it out as well.
I’m going to give this anime 3/5 stars! Thanks for reading and let me know what you thought of this anime or will you even watch this.
