Psyren Manga Review

Psyren is a Japanese shōnen manga series by Toshiaki Iwashiro. This was a random manga I ended up checking online years ago and I still think, to this day, that’s it’s very good. Could use an anime adaptation instead of those light novel adaptations they keep doing.

The manga follows Ageha Yoshina, a high school student who is chosen by Nemesis Q to participate in the Psyren games. The games take place in a world known initially as Psyren, Ageha and his friends are tasked to save this world.

Back to the Future

Pysren is an awesome manga and one that I still hold in high regards. Too bad it was canceled before the story could be ended properly.

The manga was drawn really well, the action scenes and dystopian landscapes were done really well. The character designs are somewhat Final Fantasy generic clones but it was still pretty good and distinct.

The story really is where this manga shines, it had everything; action, romance, suspense, drama. All of the aspects were done well. It was simple, yet complicated enough to keep you guessing and not get bored with what was happening. The pacing of the story was great as well, not a lot of fillers, characters and story were developed in a balanced manner. Psyren also did a great job at using the characters it had, even though the designs were generic, the backstory and their actions really supplemented the overall arc of the story.

Psyren itself as a manga has a lot different genre being utilized and some twist that you did not expect. It had a very mature content for what it was trying to sell as.

The Truth is Out There

With that said, Psyren had its share of faults. Some of the characters who deserved a backstory did not receive one. I blame the Naruto/Bleach syndrome, too many characters and not enough story to tell with. The ending felt rushed, but being canceled can do that to you, it could’ve used a whole arc really. I was baffled as to why this was canceled, I can only assume it was getting to mature for most people.

Overall, if you have the time – read this manga. Even with my tiny critique, the whole overall experience is something that should not be missed.

I am giving this manga 4/5 stars, thanks for reading my review! Follow me on Instagram for daily anime stuff and Facebook as well.
