Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records [Anime Review]
Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records an anime television series adaptation by Liden Films aired from April to June 2017. It was adapted from a Japanese light novel series written by Tarō Hitsuji and illustrated by Kurone Mishima.
The anime is about Glenn Radars, a lazy shut-in whose only goal seems to be doing the least amount of effort and still being able to mooch off powerful mage, Celica Arfania. After bumming off from her for a year, she seizes the opportunity to get him a job when a position opens up at the academy.
Glenn seems to care for nothing but as time goes on he starts to show that he is much better at it than most instructors. He eventually gains their respect and trust but Glenn is a man who has a tough and dark past that follows him in the academy.
The Lazy Substitute Teacher
The music and soundtrack of this anime are quite forgettable, I wasn’t particularly impressed with what they had here.
The animation was alright, it could’ve been better. I know I might sound like I’m nitpicking but I wasn’t impressed with the magickal matrix designs they used and the color palette they chose from.
The character designs are pretty generic and the style they used on the female students seems so wrong, too much skin for my taste (even if these are fictional characters).
The characters themselves are pretty boring except for Glenn, I like his backstory. Trying to become a man of justice but once he got to the real world, his path changed as he realized the world is not as forgiving as in the books.
The story had some potential but it failed to capture my interest. Glenn had an interesting background and premise but they failed to utilize it to boost the momentum of the story, the reveal didn’t have the “oomph” you would expect from an earth-shattering revelation .
Those Who Can’t-Do, Teach!
Overall, I feel that they could’ve done better with Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records. Especially with the potential of the world background and Glenn himself. I’m always fond of the “hero with a dark background” niche and the effort for this anime fell flat.
Nothing about this anime excited me and I was disappointed with the way the story ended up in the end. Can’t really blame the studio since this might be the source material. I feel that after the boom of adapting light novels to anime, the quality and source material chosen has dropped.
I will have to give Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records a 2.5/5 harem girls. Feels like the story and character was a wasted opportunity for something better.
Thanks for reading and feel free to comment so you can let me know what your thoughts. Let me know if there are other, good, light novel adaptations to anime I should check out.
